MINIATURE BUT MIGHTY
by Bob Kradjian, M.D.

All right you classic car lovers! Would you like to see a tiny, internal com- bustion, four-cycle car engine with pistons no bigger than a thimble? Can you picture a running engine that you can actually hold in your hand? Would you like to see an Offenhauser midget engine five in- ches long? How about a three inch tall Harly-Davidson? For the classic American car enthusiast, how about a ten inch long 1947 Cadillac flat-head V-8 engine? If you're a nostalgia buff, how about a 1915 Hold Caterpillar tractor engine?

What if all these engines actually ran, actually produced noise, smoke, and power? They can, and they will. These are not store bought two cycle engines, they are all four cycle, multi-cylinder, hand built versions of full-sized automobile and motorcycle engines. you can see and hear all of this at the Palo Alto Concours d'Elegance this year. The members of "Bay Area Engine Modelers" plan to provide 20 or more of these tiny gems to display and run for your pleasure.

The first West Coast display of such engines at a classic car show took place at the 1997 Palo Alto Concours. This year's exhibit should be more than twide as large. Please join us in celebrating the art of the miniature automobile engine. We would be pleased to answer any questions and demonstrate the running engines. We'll even tell you how you can make one of your own.
