STANFORD'S BOB BOWLSBY NAMED HONORARY CHAIR

OF THE 2008 PALO ALTO CONCOURS d'ELEGANCE AT STANFORD

Bob Bowlsby, Stanford University Athletic Director, has been named Honorary Chairman of the 2008 edition of the Palo Alto Concours d'Elegance, according to Gil Gilfix, concours executive director.

Bowlsby took over the Cardinal athletic department in July 2006 following 15 years at the helm of the University of Iowa's athletic program where he earned a reputation as one of the most admired, energetic and ambitious athletic administrators in the nation. At Stanford, he now directs a department that includes 35 intercollegiate varsity teams - 15 men's, 19 women's and one coed - plus the physical education department, intramurals, club sports, open recreation and the Stanford Golf Course.

"I'm pleased to serve as the '08 Palo Alto Concours honorary chairman. This is the 38th year that Stanford has hosted this event, and it's been a mutually rewarding relationship all around. The elegance and beauty of vintage cars fits well with our tradition of excellence in academics and athletics."

Although modest about his "car guy" credentials, he admits that, "I restored a 1950 Mercury to original equipment a few years ago, and I had a really nice '67 Thunderbird with 'suicide doors' which was a lot of fun." He also has an affinity for mid-'60s Corvettes.

While at Iowa, he served as chair of the NCAA Wrestling Committee and has served on NCAA committees on Financial Aid and Amateurism and the Special Committee to Review Amateurism Issues. He also was elected chair of the NCAA Olympic Sports Liaison Committee and represented the NCAA as one of two voting members on the U.S. Olympic Committee.

Bowlsby, 55, is a native of Waterloo, Iowa. He earned his bachelor's degree from Moorhead State University (Minnesota) in 1975 and his master's degree from the University of Iowa in 1978. He and his wife, Candice, have four children: Lisa, Matt, Rachel and Kyle.
